Grade Answers for Specific Students

You can grade your students' answers to short-answer, essay, PencilPad, file-upload, or Show My Work questions for a specific student to have a more complete view of the student's grasp of the subject matter.

To grade one student's answers to all questions:

  1. Open the My Classes or ClassView page.
    • For My Classes, click Tasks > My Classes Page and find the section you want.
    • For ClassView, click Jump to Class and select the section you want.
  2. Click scores for the assignment with questions that need grading.
  3. Select the check box for the student or students whose answers you want to grade.
Tip: You can select multiple students for grading.
  4. For Student Names, select
    • Show to show students' names with their answers.
    • Hide to hide names so you do not know whose answers you are grading.
  5. Click Grade Answers.
  6. For Questions, select Grade All.
  7. Click Start Grading.

A student's answers are displayed on the page, along with the answer keys.

  8. Score your student's answer for each question.
    1. Evaluate each answer using the key or assigned rubric to determine the student's score.
    2. Type the score in the Score box.
    3. Optional: Type information in the Comment box to help your student.
You might indicate what parts of the question were not adequately addressed in the student's response, possibly with a scoring rubric, or you might provide an explanation to help your student better understand the material.

Only the student's latest answer is displayed to be scored. To view your student's previous answers for the assignment, click View Responses and view any previous answers to the question.

If you score a question that you or another grader has already scored, your new score and comments replace the previous score and comments. If you want to average the scores of multiple graders, each grader should type a score in the Comment box (preserving any previous comments) and the last grader should manually average the scores and type the average in the Score box.

  9. Click
    • Save This Score/Comment to save the score and comment for a single question.
    • Save at the top or bottom of the page to update WebAssign with all of the scores and comments you added. When you click Save you will automatically advance to the answers for the next student.
  10. Evaluate and score the student's answer to the next question, and so on, until all of the student's answers have been scored.
Important: Save your scores and comments before leaving the page. If you do not, your scores and answers will not be saved.
  11. If you selected more than one student, to grade other student answers either
    • Click Next: Student Name.
    • or Select a student from the Go to Student menu.
Tip: You do not have to grade all answers at one time. You can click Save to save your scores and comments, and then grade the remaining answers at another time. You might want to make a note to yourself indicating which answers have been graded and which have not.
