Set Significant Figure Options for an Assignment

Some numerical questions require your students to specify the correct number of significant figures in their response in order to receive credit. You can configure whether your assignments check significant figures for these questions or treat them like ordinary numerical questions; what tolerance to use when significant figures are checked; whether to award partial credit for numerically correct responses that do not use the correct number of significant figures; and what kind of help to provide students about specifying significant figures in their responses.

Best Practice Do not change assignments that your students are already working on. You are likely to cost your students points, submissions, or both. Instead, consider creating a copy of the scheduled assignment and making your changes to the copy.

If you must change a scheduled assignment, notify your students of the change and rescore the assignment. See Rescore Assignments.

  1. Edit the assignment or assignment template settings.
    To do this Do this
Change the assignment template In the Assignment Templates Manager, click Edit for the template.
    Change the current assignment only

In the Assignment Editor, click Edit Settings.

If the assignment used a template, the settings from the selected template become editable in the Assignment Editor and the template is no longer used.

  2. If needed, expand the Significant Figures settings.
  3. Select Override class settings.
  4. Select or clear Check SigFigs.
When Check SigFigs is cleared, no other significant figures options are available.
  5. Select or clear the options for SigFigs Help.
  6. For Tolerance, select the integer between 0 and 9 by which the student's response can differ from the answer key at the last significant digit and still be considered correct. The default value is 1.
  7. For Partial Credit for Value, type a number between 0 and 100 to specify the percentage of the question's point value to award for numerically correct responses that are specified with too many significant figures.

No credit is awarded for responses that specify too few significant figures.

  8. Click Save to apply your changes.
