Copy and Paste Category Averages from Files

You can copy and paste category average scores from a file to your GradeBook for categories, such as participation, for which no assignments exist.

  1. From the GradeBook, click Settings.
  2. Click the Categories tab.
  3. At the top of the Categories page, select an assignment category.

If the category you want to use is not listed, first add it to the GradeBook.

  4. Set the GradeBook not to calculate averages for the category.

If WebAssign will calculate Category averages is shown, click Change, then OK to confirm.

WebAssign is not set to calculate Category averages is shown.

  5. Click Enter or Update Category Averages.
  6. In Enter total value of this category, type the total point value for the category.

For GradeBooks based on weighted category averages, the point value might be a percentage specified as a positive integer without the % sign.

  7. Select Copy and paste averages from a file on your computer.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Download a category average template for your class.

Download the template to get a file — prepopulated with your students' information — formatted correctly for you to add category scores.

Note If you skip this step, you will need to create the file and add your students' information manually.

    Under Download Roster:

    1. Select fullname or student number if you want to include this information.
    2. Select the file extension to use for the downloaded file.
    3. Click Download.

The file is downloaded as a tab-separated text file with the filename extension you selected.

    For example:

    Username	Fullname	Average
    maryallen52@webassign	Allen, Mary
    patriciagarcia86@webassign	Garcia, Patricia
    bettynguyen98@webassign	Nguyen, Betty
    johnrodriguez67@webassign	Rodriguez, John
    danielwhite08@webassign	White, Daniel
  10. Open the template file in your spreadsheet editor — both Excel and Google Sheets work well — and add category scores.

Enter each student's category average score in the Average column. You can add scores only for one category at a time.

Scores must be numeric and specified as points out of the total point value.

Letter grades and missing scores are displayed as NA in WebAssign and are counted as 0 points.

    For example:

    Username Fullname Average
    maryallen52@webassign Allen, Mary 42
    patriciagarcia86@webassign Garcia, Patricia 38
    bettynguyen98@webassign Nguyen, Betty 48
    johnrodriguez67@webassign Rodriguez, John 46
    danielwhite08@webassign White, Daniel 36
  11. Select all the spreadsheet cells with data (including the student usernames) and copy your selection.
  12. Paste the copied data into the box.

Your data should be pasted as tab-delimited text.

If your data are not pasted correctly, save your spreadsheet as a tab-delimited text file, open the file with a text editor, and copy from that.

  13. Click Next.
  14. Review the scores.

To make changes, you use your browser's Back button.

  15. Click Next.
  16. Optional: Click Update GradeBook.
