# Upload Files Containing Category Averages

You can upload category average scores from a file to your GradeBook for categories, such as participation, for which no assignments exist.

If the category you want to use is not listed, first add it to the GradeBook.

4. Set the GradeBook not to calculate averages for the category.

If WebAssign will calculate Category averages is shown, click Change, then OK to confirm.

WebAssign is not set to calculate Category averages is shown.

5. Click Enter or Update Category Averages.
6. In Enter total value of this category, type the total point value for the category.

For GradeBooks based on weighted category averages, the point value might be a percentage specified as a positive integer without the % sign.

7. Select Upload a file containing averages.
8. Click Next.

Note If you skip this step, you will need to create the file and add your students' information manually.

1. Select fullname or student number if you want to include this information.

The file is downloaded as a tab-separated text file with the filename extension you selected.

For example:

patriciagarcia86@webassign	Garcia, Patricia
bettynguyen98@webassign	Nguyen, Betty
johnrodriguez67@webassign	Rodriguez, John

Enter each student's category average score in the Average column. You can add scores only for one category at a time.

Scores must be numeric and specified as points out of the total point value.

Letter grades and missing scores are displayed as NA in WebAssign and are counted as 0 points.
