Include Files in Assignments

You can include videos and other instructional content in the assignment instructions to prepare students before they begin the assignment. This is useful for homework, in class, and practice assignments.

If the content you want to include is already online, link to it instead of uploading it to WebAssign.

Link to an external resource

These are general instructions for any web address, including links to Cengage textbook videos.

  1. Copy and paste the following into Instructions to students: <a href="web-address" target="_blank">link-text</a>
  2. Copy the web address you want to link to and replace web-address with the web address.
  3. Replace link-text with the text you want to display to students.
  4. Click Preview to confirm that your link displays and works correctly.

Embed a YouTube Video

  1. Open the video you want to link.
  2. Click Share > Embed.
  3. Click Copy.
  4. In WebAssign, paste the code under Instructions to students.
  5. Click Preview to confirm that your video displays correctly.

Embed a Vimeo Video

  1. Open the video you want to link.
  2. Click Share.
  3. Copy the code under Embed.
  4. In WebAssign, paste the code under Instructions to students.
  5. Click Preview to confirm that your video displays correctly.

Link an Excel file

  1. In WebAssign copy and paste the following into Instructions to students: <a href="web-address" target="_blank">link-text</a>
  2. Open your Excel® file in Excel for the web.
  3. Click Share > Share.
  4. Confirm that the file sharing settings specify that anyone can view the file.
  5. Click Copy link.
  6. In WebAssign, replace web-address with the link you copied from your Excel file.
  7. Replace link-text with the text you want to display to students.
  8. Click Preview to confirm that your link displays and works correctly.

Embed a Google Sheets file

  1. Open the Google Sheets® you want to link.
  2. Click File > Share > Publish to web.
  3. Click the Embed tab.
  4. Choose to embed the entire document or a single tab, and click Publish.
  5. Copy the code.
  6. In WebAssign, paste the code under Instructions to students.
  7. Click Preview to confirm that your file displays correctly.

Attach a file from your computer

  1. Under Instructions to students, click Include File.

    A pop-up window opens.

  2. Click Import File.

    A second pop-up window opens.

  3. Click Choose File.
  4. Navigate to your file and click Open.
  5. Click go!. You can close the second pop-window.

    The file is added to the list of imported media in the first pop-up window.

  6. Select the file from the list.
  7. Next to Destination Field: Instructions, click go!.
