Schedule a Timed Assignment

Give your students a specific amount of time to complete an assignment. Timed assignments are recommended for quizzes and tests.

When you assign timed work, make sure your students understand the following:
  • Once they start the assignment, the timer does not stop, even if they close the assignment.
  • The due date is either when the timer expires or the original assignment due date and time, whichever comes first.
  1. Schedule the assignment, if you have not already done so.
  2. Open the Schedule page and navigate to the assignment.
    1. Open the My Classes page.
    2. Click Class Schedule under Class Tools.
    3. Click a scheduled assignment in the Assignments list to view the week for which it is scheduled.
  3. Beside the assignment, click Actions button > Edit Restrictions.
  4. Select Timed Assignment.
  5. Select the number of minutes to allow for the assignment.

If the number of minutes you want is not listed, select other and type the number of minutes you want. You must enter a whole number between 1 and 999.

  6. To give additional time to certain students:
    1. Click Grant extra time for specific students.
    2. Select students from the list or click expand next to a student's name.
    1. Set the extension terms.
Extended Due Date and Extended Due Time
The new due date and time for the assignment.
      Submissions
The total number of allowed submissions for the assignment. See Additional Submissions.
      Add Time (Minutes)
Extra time that students are allowed to work on the assignment. This only applies to timed assignments.
      Penalize
A positive number — or 0 for no penalty — and the penalty method you want to use with each extension.
      % unearned
A percentage of the point value of the questions answered correctly after the extension is granted. No penalty is applied if no more questions are answered correctly.
      % total
A percentage of the total possible points for the assignment. This penalty is applied when the extension is granted.
      points
The specified number of points. This penalty is applied when the extension is granted.

      See Extension Penalties.

    2. Click Save or Save to selected students.
  7. Optional: Select Drop Security and Time Restrictions after and select a date and time after which your students can access the assignment.

Security restrictions (password, IP address, and LockDown Browser®) are not automatically lifted from assignments after the due date. Usually, these restrictions mean that your students can't see their scores and feedback for individual assignment questions.

To allow this, either drop the assignment restrictions manually from the Schedule page or select Drop Security and Time Restrictions after and set the date and time to drop the restrictions automatically.

  8. Click Save.

Timed assignments are indicated with an hourglass icon timed icon.

While your students work on a timed assignment, a timer displays the remaining time in the top right corner.
