Gradebook Categories

Every WebAssign assignment has a gradebook category. Use one of the default gradebook categories or create your own custom categories. Gradebook categories are used to identify different kinds of assignments for several purposes:

Note This information describes how to use the new Assignment Editor.

If needed, click Try the New Assignment Editor in the original Assignment Editor to enable this improved experience now.

  • assignment inclusion or weighting in gradebook calculation
  • in score reporting and downloads
  • to set different extension policies
  • to communicate to your students
Note Gradebook categories are not synced to your LMS.

Default Gradebook Categories

  • Homework
  • Quiz
  • Test
  • Lab
  • Exam
  • In_Class
  • Prereq Diagnostic
  • Practice
Note The Final category shown in the gradebook means the student's overall grade. It is not an assignment category. If needed, you can add a custom category for your final exam.

Custom Gradebook Categories

If needed, create your own categories. You can rename your custom categories, but you cannot delete them.

  1. From the menu, click Grades > Custom Categories.
Your custom assignment categories are listed.
  2. To create a new category, type a new category name and click Save.

You can't use the name of an existing category.

  3. To rename a custom category, click it, edit its name, and click Save.

Renaming a category does not change its use in any way. Only the name changes. You cannot rename the default categories.

Your new or renamed gradebook categories are available.

If you renamed a category, it is updated in all your assignments and settings, but currently open pages will not show the name change until you save your work and reopen the page.

Shared Assignments with Custom Categories If you schedule or duplicate an assignment created by someone else that uses a custom gradebook category, you can use that category in classes to which you schedule the assignment, but you cannot create new assignments using that category.
