Marvin JS Answer Looks Correct But Marked Incorrect

Sometimes a Marvin JS answer that looks like the answer key is marked wrong.

Cause

This problem can happen because of structural problems like hidden atoms or incomplete bond patterns.

For example, a bond that looks like it ends at a particular atom might not be connected to it.

Resolution

  1. Click Edit Drawing, or click anywhere in the Marvin JS frame.
    Note When viewing your student's work, nothing you do in Marvin JS is saved, so you can't change your student's answer.

  2. Click the correct Marvin JS cleanup tool — either clean or clean 3D.

    These tools often reveal structural problems like hidden atoms or incomplete bond patterns.

    • Two-dimensional drawings: click clean.
    • Three-dimensional drawings: click clean 3D.
    Note Because this is a complex operation, the drawing might not be updated immediately.
