WebAssign is seeking a Manager of Technical Operations to join our team. The Manager of Technical Operations is responsible for ensuring that WebAssign’s application performs at a level consistent with WebAssign’s demanding 24x7 operational needs. The manager will oversee the design, development, operation, and continuous improvement of the tools and resources that deliver our software-as-a-service application. The scope of responsibility spans production and development tiers. To successfully execute this role, it will be particularly important for the manager to nurture close, collaborative relationships with co-workers in Information Technology, Product Development, Application Development, and Customer Support. The role is ideally suited for a manager who prefers a hands-on approach, since this function is in its infancy at WebAssign.
Core Responsibilities
- Develop, lead, and coach engineers and other specialists responsible for ensuring that WebAssign’s application meets or exceeds desired service level availability objectives.
- Ensure WebAssign’s application is proactively monitored at every layer of the technology stack.
- Proactively address potential capacity and performance issues by facilitating the provisioning of additional resources as needed and/or facilitating the correction of inefficient code, configuration, integration, and/or database query issues.
- Define, measure, monitor, and analyze key performance indicators, leveraging data to drive ongoing process and product improvements.
- Deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot our production web applications and supporting services.
- Manage environments across all tiers, including production, staging, QA, and development.
- Investigate and advocate for new technology solutions that support and advance the goals and objectives of the company.
- Ensure consistency of operations within the broader technology organization.
- Identify and seize opportunities to improve productivity and reduce costs.
- In collaboration with IT, establish an on-call rotation that provides application support on a 24x7x365 basis.
Requirements
- Expertise with many of the technologies we utilize: Solaris, FreeBSD, CentOS, Apache, MySQL 5.5.12.
- Proven leadership skills and business acumen, along with experience managing direct reports.
- Solid experience in leading organizational change.
- Ability to create structure in an ambiguous, rapidly growing, and changing team environment.
- Knowledge of Continuous Integration, DevOps, ITIL, and Agile a plus.
- 3 to 5 years managing enterprise-class application operations efforts.
Education
Bachelor's degree required. Prefer degree in computer science, MIS, or related discipline.
