Now enhanced with WebAssign, the fourth edition of Astronomy is fully updated with the latest astronomy discoveries and online resources to meet the needs of today's students. Its unique and compelling stars-first organization allows students to see that the planets of our solar system are a natural byproduct of star formation. Focusing on two central questions—"What Are We?" and "How Do We Know?"—Seeds, Backman, and Wegryn help students understand their place in the universe and how scientists work.

Most questions from this textbook are available in WebAssign. The online questions are identical to the textbook questions; however, randomized parameters have been added so that each student receives a unique version of the question.

Features:

  • Learn It: Students need a platform to help shed pre-course misconceptions, gain fundamental knowledge and learn core concepts in an active, engaging way.
    • Quick Lessons are short and engaging animated videos which cover important concepts across the text.
    • Tutorials coach the student through the steps of problems. These scaffolded learning activities give strong support to the student and many use animations, interactive figures, or other multimedia elements. Student learning is then assessed with a variety of item types.
  • Apply It: Instructors need a platform that will help students develop problem-solving skills with both quantitative and qualitative problems that can't be found online.
    • Optimized Problem Sets offer randomized parameters and provide targeted feedback to students who have incorrectly answered any part of the problem.
    • Problems, including ranking exercises (.ORD) and multiple-select items, are adapted from the textbook questions and provide opportunities for test prep and formative assessment. These may appear in the back of textbook chapters, though numbers and contextual details may be randomized for a customized learning experience.
  • Read It: links under each question quickly jump to the corresponding section of a complete eBook.
  • Virtual Astronomy Laboratories (VALs) can be assigned as a standalone activity or as part of a larger learning experience. VAL incorporates real astronomical data, simulations, and other interactive elements, offering students the opportunity to experience astronomy as a scientist. Targeted feedback guides students in revising any incorrect answers.
  • Stellarium Activities: Immersive experiences powered by the open-source planetarium software, Stellarium. Students embark on engaging cosmic journeys, exploring constellations, planets, and beyond, with comprehensive, step-by-step questions curated by experts to enhance celestial understanding and hone critical thinking skills. Stellarium Activities bring the wonders of the night sky into the classroom like never before and is available in all new Astronomy Webassign Courseware.
  • Digital Workbook Problems: The Workbook problems combine narrative and assessment elements as part of a singular learning activity that is delivered within WebAssign. The problems interweave narrative and interactives of a variety of media types with assessments, containing an introduction to the relevant topics and subtopics.

Questions Available within WebAssign

Most questions from this textbook are available in WebAssign. The online questions are identical to the textbook questions except for minor wording changes necessary for Web use. Whenever possible, variables, numbers, or words have been randomized so that each student receives a unique version of the question. This list is updated nightly.
