The new edition of Beginning and Intermediate Algebra: A Guided Approach, 7th edition, is an exciting and innovative revision that takes an already successful text and makes it more compelling for today's instructor and student. The authors have developed a learning plan to help students succeed and transition to the next level in their coursework. Based on their years of experience in developmental education, this accessible approach builds upon the book's known clear writing and engaging style, which teaches students to develop problem-solving skills and strategies that they can use in their everyday lives. The authors have developed an acute awareness of students' approach to homework and present a learning plan keyed to Learning Objectives and supported by a comprehensive range of exercise sets that reinforces the material that students have learned, setting the stage for their success.

Fall 2022 Digital Content Update: Continued Improvements

  • New scaffolded course pack added for this course. The new Scaffolded Course Pack was created with a scaffolded approach in mind and in keeping with the learning design principle of intentional design. It adapts a storytelling technique and 4-step framework from literature and gameful design to mimic the flow of a lecture and how students master concepts. First, it introduces a concept and then develops it with questions of greater complexity that develop conceptual understanding while offering supportive help tools. Then students are asked to work through an application and verify their understanding with help supports tapering off. The Course Pack is now a self-contained and guided learning experience. It enables students to build their skills in an intentional, structured way through a steady lessening of guidance, support, and a subtle increase in complexity as they work through an assignment.

Spring 2022 Digital Content Update: Continued Improvements

  • 70 New Learn It resources:Narratives, videos and tutorials - all in one place - to help your students practice the prerequisite mathematics concepts they need to be successful in their course.
  • 13 problems have been updated for question maintenance (ongoing question revisions for consistency, accuracy and accessibility such as including alt text for images and graphs.)
  • New Question Versions: When new question versions are available, your question name will include NVA. Instructors can then search for those questions in the Question Browser to add them to their assignments.

Question Types

  • NEW Learn Its for Developmental Math
Help your students become confident, self-sufficient learners with new Learn It modules. Learn It modules address your students' knowledge gaps with just-in-time instruction that meets their diverse learning styles. Available as an additional resource within questions, Learn Its provide targeted instruction and practice on that topic using narrative, videos, and tutorials-all in one place. If the topic is still too challenging, students can choose to continue learning through associated prerequisite Learn Its until they feel confident in their knowledge and preparedness.
  • NEW Responsive Questions (RQ) personalize the learning experience for your students by asking them to use their own real data, which provides the variables they will use to answer each question part.
  • Concept Check (CC) questions provide students with short, multi-step videos reviewing math concepts. The student is required to answer a question after each video to help confirm understanding of each concept.
  • Expanded Problem (EP) questions are expanded versions of existing questions that include intermediary steps to guide the student to the final answer.
  • Master It Tutorials (MI) show students how to solve a similar problem in multiple steps by providing direction along with derivation, so the student understands the concepts.
